IELTS 5 to 6

Advantages/Disadvantages: IELTS Task 2 Writing Band 6 Success: Full Structure

How do you decide what to do?

If someone tells you the advantages of something, how do you feel?

What do you ask them?

“Hey, it’s great if you jump off this bridge!”

what do you say?

WHY? What do I GET out of this?

If they say “It’s exciting!”, it’s an advantage right?

Will you do it?

You should ask some questions…

‘How tall is the bridge? How deep is the water? Has someone jumped off it before? Are there big rocks in the water?

The answer to these questions are linked to advantages or disadvantages.

It’s a short bridge, so it’s safer. OK good! Advantage.

it’s very deep water. OK good but wait, ‘How fast is the water moving?’

You see what I’m doing here.

You need to organise the points.

Band 8 Sample Essay

Question:
Some people believe that professional workers such as doctors and teachers should be paid more than sports and entertainment personalities. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Essay:
In many modern societies, the gap in earnings between essential professional workers and celebrities has become increasingly wide. While athletes and entertainers often receive enormous salaries, professionals such as doctors and teachers—who provide crucial services—are frequently underpaid. I strongly believe that professionals should receive higher compensation than those in the entertainment industry.

Doctors spend many years acquiring medical knowledge and practical skills, often undergoing intense training and long working hours. They are responsible for making life-saving decisions, handling emergencies, and maintaining public health. Similarly, teachers play a fundamental role in shaping the future of society. They guide young people through learning, critical thinking, and emotional development. Despite the importance of these roles, many professionals earn relatively low incomes compared to celebrities.

By contrast, entertainment figures provide enjoyment, escapism, and cultural engagement. While these contributions are valuable, they are not essential to the functioning of a healthy society. Moreover, celebrity salaries are often driven by advertising, social media influence, and global popularity rather than direct impact or responsibility. The extreme income gap is difficult to justify when measured against societal need.

In conclusion, although entertainers offer value through art, performance, and inspiration, professionals like doctors and teachers perform duties that directly affect health, education, and long-term societal progress. Their roles are fundamental, and their compensation should reflect the depth and necessity of their contribution. Increasing their pay would also attract more individuals to these crucial professions, ensuring long-term benefits for society as a whole.
